HMAS ''Perth'' was one of three modified British ''Leander''-class light cruisers that were sold to the Royal Australian Navy from the Royal Navy before World War II. Originally named HMS ''Amphion'', she was the flagship for the Commander-in-Chief, Africa for a few years until she was sold to the RAN in 1939 and renamed after the Australian city of Perth. At the opening of the war she patrolled the western Atlantic and Carribean escorting supply convoys and looking for German shipping. She then moved to the Mediterranean escorting convoys, having a minor role in the Battle of Cape Matapan, and escorting convoys to Greece and Crete as well as evacuating troops from there when the Axis defeated the Allies there. After fighting in the African campaign by providing fire support in the Syria-Lebanon campaign, she was transferred to Southeast Asia to fight the Japanese invading the Dutch East Indies. She fought in the Battle of the Java Sea where she took no damage but was less fortunate in the Battle of Sundra Strait where she along with heavy cruiser USS ''Houston'' and destroyer HMNLS ''Evertsen'' encountered a huge Japanese fleet and after a fierce battle was sunk along with her allies and with half of her crew lost with the ship. | |||
