Mahan is an American Belle available at the 1939 start of the game. She is one of six starter Belles for an American-aligned player (she is not one of the two exclusive to game backers).

Character Information

History

USS Mahan was the lead ship of the Mahan-class of destroyers, which were relatively innovative with a variety of new technologies and designs like quad-torpedo launchers, protective gun shelters, diesel emergency generators, and a simpler but efficient steam engine introduced. When World War II reached the US with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Mahan and her group were out at sea and were diverted to try to chase down the Japanese invaders as they escaped but they found nothing and returned to the just-attacked harbor. As the US pushed into the Pacific she participated in the attacks on the Marshall Islands and Gilbert Islands, Adm. Nimitz and Adm. Halsey commended her destroyer group for their effort in protecting the carriers USS Hornet and USS Enterprise at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, and provided cover for several island landings in the New Guinea campaign. Exactly three years after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1944 Mahan's luck ran out and a relentless barrage of attacks from Japanese kamikaze suicide attacks caused her to be heavily damaged at Leyte, and following her crew's evacuation she was scuttled by her fellow USN destroyers.
