Character Information

Personality and traits

Aoba is a happy, smart, and extremely creative Belle who has a knack for engineering and inventing things. She also has an adoration of science fiction media, especially Buck Rogers. She also has a massive celebrity crush on Buster Crabbe, the American Olympic swimming champion and actor that portrays him in the movies, even saying that she loves his arms and wants to measure his biceps[1]. In her story she talks about how she wants to invent a revolutionary new invention to represent Japan and give it worldwide recognition, and uses captured Morgana technology to create some strange technologies like a suit that changes color and a kind of extremely powerful grenade launcher.

Tombstone quotes

Heroic She fixed that which needed fixing.
Tragic Even in destruction, there is hope for renewal.

Character Trivia

  • She has no sister ships in game, either of her own Aoba-class or the Furutaka-class they are a subclass of.
  • The writer and father of Japanese science fiction Sano Shōichi, better known by his pen name Unno Juza, served onboard Aoba during WWII as a news and propaganda writer despite the fact he was critical of Japan's expansionism. This is reason for Aoba's love for science fiction (and on the side, the reason that Aoba in KanColle and Azur Lane are news reporters).
  • She is a big fan of American sci-fi franchise Buck Rogers. She also has a huge crush on champion Olympic swimmer and the actor of Buck Rogers in the films Buster Crabbe, and becomes flustered and embarrassed when asked about it by her captain.

History Trivia
  • Named after Mt. Aoba, a volcano near Maizuru, Kyoto.
  • Lead ship of her own class of heavy cruisers alongside her lone sister Kinugasa. Originally meant to be the next two Furutaka-class they had their designs changed to improve them which also got them classified as their own class. These improvements were later retrofitted to the Furutaka-class.
  • They became the first class of ships in the IJN to have an aircraft catapult, with Kinugasa being given one in 1928 and Aoba a year later.
  • Served extensively in the Pacific theater, fighting alongside her sisters in the invasion of Guam and Wake Island as well as the naval battles of the Coral Sea, Savo Island, and Cape Esperance.
  • Crippled late in the war by submarine USS Bream and moored at Kure as a reserve ship. A USAAF air raid caused her to sink to the shallow bottom of the harbor but she was continued to be used as a stationary AA platform. Finally finished off by USAAF B-24s bombing and breaking off her stern on July 28th, 1945.
